The Department of Fish and Game (DFG) and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (Service) have delayed implementation of the Paiute Cutthroat Trout Restoration Project. The delay, from the Summer/Fall 2010 until the Summer/Fall 2011, is due to potential contracting difficulties arising from the lack of a state budget and spending authority.
DFG and the Service, in cooperation with the U.S. Forest Service, developed the project to restore Paiute cutthroat trout, a species federally listed as threatened, to Silver King Creek, which is its historic habitat in California’s Alpine County, south of Lake Tahoe.
The project will involve removing non-native fish by applying rotenone, a natural piscicide, in Silver King Creek from Llewellyn Falls downstream to Silver King Canyon, as well as the accessible reaches of three small tributaries: Tamarack Creek, Tamarack Lake Creek and the lower reaches of Coyote Valley Creek.
Agencies collaborating on the project will ensure that contracts are in place and executable in a timely manner before implementation next year.
