About High Sierra Fly Casters

The High Sierra Fly Casters is dedicated to the encouragement of fly fishing and the maintenance of the fisheries of northwestern Nevada and northeastern California. Our club was formed about fifteen years ago to foster fly fishing and to support proper management of our local fisheries for all fishermen to enjoy. We’re an active club and believe that we have made significant strides towards meeting both of these goals.

Just a few current and past examples:

We led the charge to maintain the entire Rosaschi Ranch as Catch and Release. We’re working hard to provide critically important sanitation facilities on the Ranch. We helped stop the proposed one-step draw down of the Truckee in 1997 which would have had a disastrous effect on the entire biology of that stream. We were at the forefront in planning an important professional/lay workshop held this spring which took a fresh look at what can be done to improve the fisheries in the Carson Drainage.

We continue to support a cooperative program called “Trout in the Classroom.” with Douglas County Schools, the U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Lahontan National Hatchery and USDA. The program provides school children with hands on experience in raising trout in the classroom.

Every year we assist both the California Department of Fish and Game and the Nevada Division of Wildlife with shocking surveys, stocking etc. We are currently planning future activities with both Departments to further assist them during this period of drastically limited budgets.

At our meetings, we try hard to present programs which help you learn about fly fishing. Knowledgeable fishers tell us their secrets. Experienced fly tiers demonstrate their skills prior to nearly every meeting.

We sponsor a number of “fish-outs” during the year where experienced anglers try to help those less experienced.

We’re affiliated with both CAL TROUT and the International Federation of Fly Fishers (FFF). FFF has recently provided us with a $2,500 grant for work on the East Walker. Through FFF, we carry special liability insurance and coverage for members involved in club activities.

We work closely with our sister clubs to the north — The Truckee River Fly Fishers and the Tahoe/Truckee Fly Fishers — on all conservation issues. We plan to develop the same working relationships with the newly formed Carson City Club. Member Mike Matuska is assigned the task of serving on the Board of the Northern California Council of the Federation of Fly Fishers.

We think we’re a great club — one you should be proud to belong to. Dues are $30.00 for a family membership to HSFC, P.O. Box 3121, Gardnerville, NV 89410. Individual memberships for those less than 16 are $10.00.
