Tie-A-Dozen Challenge!
We challenge tiers to tie a dozen identical flies and gift them to our service programs. Our goal for this program year is 25 dozen flies (300 flies)!
The High Sierra Fly Casters hosts and supports a wide range of service programs, including Reel Kids, Reel Recovery, and Reel Vets retreats. We typically go through 750+ flies per year! We're in a constant need of flies suitable for the programs and, hence, this challenge to tiers.
As our programs are typically held in eastern Sierra waters including both still and running waters during the Spring, Summer, and Fall seasons, we suggest you tie something you would use yourself for fishing for trout in eastern Sierra. We also recommend tying a pattern that's within your current skill level. We can always use more buggers.
For ideas, see our Eastern Sierra Fly Box and Fly Fishing The Sierra's Flybox.
Completed dozens can be hand delivered to us at any club event or by mailing them to us.
We have some small swag to give away to those who complete this challenge.
Some tying guidelines:
Use single barbless (or debarbed) hooks for participant safety and catch-n-release practice.
Use big eye hooks, if available, for small files (#16 or smaller). Generally avoid tiny flies (#20 or smaller). Participants are typically on 3X or heavier tippet.
Avoid light hooks. Programs are generally held in waters holding big fish.
Avoid overly large, heavy, or bulky patterns as they can be hard for participants to cast.
Use non-toxic materials.
